Longevity & Well-Being Study Tools
A prominent US university commissioned a study to measure the correlation between wellness interventions and overall student performance. To capture a holistic view of student health, the research team employed multimodal data collection: biometric tracking via Oura rings, daily self-reported surveys, and logged participation in mandatory and optional well-being activities. This project required the design of a comprehensive, dual-sided platform—comprising a consumer-facing mobile app optimized for student engagement and daily compliance, alongside a complex web dashboard enabling researchers to manage cohorts and analyze dense data sets.
The Challenge
Balancing two completely different sets of needs: engagement for the study's subjects and high-density data management for the researchers.
My Approach
The Student App (Designing for Compliance)
- Study Onboarding — progressive guidance, app familiarisation
- OURA ring syncing — transparency, trust, anticipatory error prevention, asynchronous feedback
- Survey Fatigue — progressive disclosure, thumb zone optimization, positive reinforcements
- Activity Booking — intuitive discovery, easy sign-up, reminders
- Fun & Dark-Themed User Interface
The Researchers' Dashboard (Designing for Data Integrity)
- Cohort Management — control vs active group, participants management, state indicators, filtering, bulk actions
- Cross-Referencing Multimodal Data — different types of data, high data-ink ratio
- Progressive Disclosure in Tables — sidepanel with extra details and management features
Skills Applied:
Solution
- Asynchronous Oura Integration
- Low-Friction Daily Surveys
- Unified Activity Booking
- Multimodal Data Dashboards
- Smart Cohort Segmentation
- Automated Compliance Flagging
Results
- Sustained Engagement measured by Daily Survey Completion Rate (92%)
- Reduced Sync Friction measured by First-Time Pairing Success (98%)
- Ensured Data Integrity measured by Active Participant Retention Rate (88%)
- Reduced Administrative Burden
